Lunar Eclipse

My Sunday Photo – Lunar Eclipse

Yesterday morning I had a whole lot of extra motivation to get up and out the door early. Not only did I have my usual City2Surf-preparation run, I also had a brand new Amazfit Stratos multipsort watch to test out (more on that very soon). Oh, and there was also a spectacular lunar eclipse to witness!

I was out of the house by five am. The lunar eclipse was already well under way, with the earth’s shadow approximately half covering the moon. It was an amazing sight and one that was highly distracting as I drove towards my destination. My plan was to photograph the eclipse, then head out on my usual run.

By the time I parked, the Earth’s shadow was almost completely covering the surface of the moon. The red glow was beginning to intensify.

I have photographed the moon before and found it quite easy to get a good result. With the lunar eclipse, however, it was much more challenging. The issue is that there is a massive difference in the level of light between the lit and shaded parts of the moon. After a bit of trial and error, I ended up with a few shots that were reasonable.

The little bright dot up the top is Mars, which was also a spectacular sight!

My Sunday Photo – Tiny Birds

Recently I’ve been making an effort to get out at the crack of dawn capture the sunrise. In many ways it’s easier at the moment, because the sun rises so late (around 7am). In many other ways, it’s extremely difficult. My bed is warm, and I like them warm. Outside is not warm.

While I’m pretty happy with some of the sunrise photos that I have taken, I also realise it’s best to not bore you all with the same subject week after week. So this week My Sunday Photo is focussed some of the wildlife that I recently spotted – some rather cute tiny birds.

Tiny Birds

I’m almost certain that the first bird is a female fair wren. There was a brilliant-blue male hovering around the area, but he was scared off by a garbage truck before I could get my camera out. This tiny female was a bit bolder, and she stuck about for the photo shoot.

I have no idea what these other birds are. They are about the same size as the fairy wren. They look similar too, but definitely not the same. Bonus points to anyone who can identify them for me!

Okay, I said no more boring sunrises, but this last photo was taken well after sunrise, so technically it’s just a landscape photo. I quite like the atmosphere of this shot, especially with the lingering fog around the base of the cliffs. The ocean was pretty angry that morning too, although I’m not sure it really comes across in this photo.
